Context

The digital book boom

In 2009, 2 million e-books were downloaded.

Since 2009, we have been spectators to a rapid change in reading supports via multifunction devices and tablets: e-readers and tablets are becoming part of the household. More than a 25% of French people like digital as much as paper books. But digital books are far from replacing the paper, they are complementary.

Young people and reading

Combining the results of a study that we carried out among fifty teenagers in the eighth and ninth grades attending Saint Joseph middle school in Dijon, and studies from the Centre National du Livre about young people’s reading habits, we observed that a significant decrease in reading takes place in middle school because of its silent and solitary aspects. Only 40% of 14 to 16-year old teenagers read regularly, whereas the rate was 70% at the ages of 8 to 10.
